Today, we hear the story of Jessica O'Connell, 5,000m Track and Field athlete. As she was enjoying Irish dancing as a kid, Jess saw an opportunity in running tracks, to get fitter for dancing; she (and others) saw that she had a natural talent for it. And so, after some time, she went all in on it, and made it to top of world races, including a participation in the 2016 Olympics in Rio. And this journey starte with a 1km race in elementary school..

This was obviously not love at first sight with this discipline, but the adrenaline of the jump made Anicka feel like she was flying; and since then, she hasn't looked back, climbing the world rankings, to end up making it to 3 consecutive Olympics. Today, Anicka reflects on what she still has in her to keep pushing forward, and also remembers about the ealy days with sparks in her eyes…

An alpine skier until he was 26, Kevin felt he wouldn't be able to make it to the Olympics; so he decided to switch to Ski cross in 2014. Even if alpine and ski cross are very different sports, one fighting against the clock, the other fighting against opponents on the slope, it took Kevin only 4 years to qualify for the 2018 Olympics, where he finished 4th. Today, Kevin is still not fully recovered from a knee injury that happened years ago, and he completely opens up on the toughest moments of his career, and also on his most joyous ones, like the 2020 World Cup Crysta Globe; this journey started when he was barely able to stand on skis...

Aujourd'hui, c'est Kim Lamarre, ancienne skieuse acrobatique dans la catégorie slopestyle, qui me rejoint sur le podcast. Le parcours de Kim est tout sauf commun; inspirée par sa grand-mère, olympienne en 1956, elle a franchi les échelons du ski, à travers de multiples blessures, pour aller chercher des médailles dans les 2 compétitions reines: les X Games et les Jeux Olympiques. Kim est transparente sur ses moments de doutes, dans une discipline ultra compétitive, où la moindre erreur dans un saut peut avoir des conséquences catastrophiques. Après avoir mis un terme à sa carrière sur les pistes, Kim s'est lancé à fond dans un autre discipline encore plus stratégique et cérébrale: le poker; avec des objectifs tout aussi hauts que ses réussites en ski. Et ce parcours a commencé au Relais du Lac Beauport.

Born in Toronto from Greek parents, Ilias went to play soccer in Greece at 14 years old, where he wasn't really accepted by teammates due to his Greek that wasn't good enough. He also faced some intimidation with local corruption and pretty intense fans, to say the least. He was transfered to Montreal early 2023, where he wants to progress in order to get his chance in one of the top European clubs in the future. Jeff Pelletier is a Canadian ultra long distance runner. Jeff started running seriously at age 27, and after a few marathons, he landed into trail running, which he right away fell in love with. He doesn't chase results and times; instead, he wants to push his body and mind to its absolute limit, taking part in events on longer and longer distances; at the moment of the recording, he was actually getting ready for the Moab 240, a 240-mile race in Utah, spread over multiple days, with little to no sleep. Jeff finished this race in the 2nd place, in 70 h and 53 min!! This episode is an incredible testimony of tenacity and discipline

Just a few days prior to moving to Vancouver and only a couple days after being back from the World Champs in Fukuoka, Finlay was nice enough to sit and chat, to tell us about the few highs and many lows of a swimmer’s journey to success. Even if he’s only 23, Finlay has faced many moments of doubts, wondering if he was really chasing his own dream or what elite sport expected him to do. While he acknowledges that finding his “Why” is an infinite quest, he managed to bring pleasure back into the pool, to reach better and better world rankings, and make sure that, when he retires, he will be proud of his career.

She explains how important it is for her to keep a good sport-life balance and healthy relationship with her sport, as she kept studying across her career, to make sure ski isn't the only thing she can rely on for her future. Ali also talks about the importance to enjoy the small wins, when your only goal is to be the best in the world!

After disappointing results in Sochi, and due to a lack of support from her federation, Valeria decided to devote herself to helping athletes transition to their new post-career life. She underlines the importance to keep fun and excitement to be able to get good results.

Shady was born in Egypt and started judo for self-defense after suffering from bullying at school. He climbed the world ranking at a crazy speed, staying world #2 for more than 2 years in the 100kg category. Shady is not hiding: he knows he has to keep his mental at the top to reach his biggest goal: the gold medal, next year at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

Née avec une malformation du diaphragme qui a requis des sérieuses opérations pour assurer sa survie, Sasha a perdu une partie de son audition à cause de certains médicaments administrés lors de cette procédure. Bien qu'encore très jeune, Sasha a déjà une grande expérience de la vie, du sport, et plus particulièrement du golf à haut niveau

And this passion is the biggest part of her amazing return, her climb through the world ranks, up to the Canadian marathon record she set in Berlin in September 2022.

At 41, Natasha is still progressing, eyeing the 2024 Olympics in Paris, and maybe a few more records. This episode is an amazing story of resilience and longevity!

Marion Thenault is a young aerial skier from Quebec, and honestly, I was blown away by her spirit, her determination, and her self consciousness.

She's 23, in the World top 3 in Aerial skiing, studies Aerospace at Concordia University, and she's planning on being one of the first carboneutral athletes thanks to a partnership with WSP.

Evan Dunfee is a Bronze medalist at the 2020 Olympics in Race Walking. He won his medal on the 50km race, which was since then discontinued at the Olympics, so he hopes to compete in the 20km race in Paris next year.

Race walking is not a popular sport, with only a few professionals in this discipline across the globe, and Evan is one of them.

He brings us through the journey that brought this young kid in school, trying to prove himself to other kids, to his Olympic medal, and the joy he has to be able to share his successes with his community.

Marie-Eve is a 2-time Olympian and Commonwealth champion weightlifter.

During her whole career, she managed to train like crazy to be among the best weightlifters in the world, while studying and keeping an active social life. It is hard to grasp how she managed to keep such a balance in her life.

After retiring from weightlifting, she became a doctor and worked in a detention center. Even though Marie-Eve likes her out-of-the-spotlight lifestyle, she deserves to be recognized as an amazing athlete and human being, and she will be an inspiration to all of the listeners.
