In this fourth and final episode about the French verb manquer, you’ll explore the expression manquer à — used when someone fails to respect a duty, a promise, a responsibility, or a moral obligation.

Few French phrases carry as much tenderness as tu me manques.

In English, we say “I miss you.” In French, the feeling seems to move in the opposite direction: tu me manques — you are the one missing from my life, from my days, from the space beside me.

And in this episode, manquer becomes a language of absence.

Maxime leaves the shared apartment he once filled with music, bad habits, and friendship, and his former roommates write to tell him how much he is missed.

Then love enters the story.

When Maxime’s girlfriend leaves for six months abroad, the apartment suddenly feels too quiet. The mornings are different. The evenings are longer. The empty side of the bed becomes impossible to ignore.

So Maxime writes her a poem:

Tu me manques le matin.
Tu me manques le soir.
Tu me manques sur le canapé.
Tu me manques sur l’oreiller.

The same French structure returns again and again, but each repetition carries a slightly different shade of longing.
