In Autumn 1967, Elisabeth Elliot visited Jerusalem to see for herself if the Israeli victory in the Six-Day War had indeed brought about a ‘new’ Jerusalem, in fulfillment of the Biblical prophecies of the Redemption of the Holy City. What she came away with is an intensely personal account of the city, its monuments, and the suffering of its people. But nonetheless prophetic.

As yet another episode of war rages in the Middle East, Pastor Marwan Aboul-Zelof decided to revisit Elliot's 1969 out-of-print book, Furnace of the Lord: Reflections on the Redemption of the Holy City, record it and share it on the Didomi podcast in the hopes that Elliot's voice speaks to us today, and to help Christians engage in peacemaking in the region and bring about healing, reconciliation and peace.

This is the fourteenth chapter of her book, Zionism.

This is the first chapter of her book, The Name of a Dream.

In this Didomi Podcast episode, Wissam al-Saliby interviews Canon Dr Andrew Smith, Director of Interfaith Relations for the Bishop of Birmingham of the Church of England. Dr Smith shares, “We are not called to tolerate our neighbour or to respect him. I am commanded to love him!” But what does it mean to show Muslims, Hindus and followers of other religions in the United Kingdom that we love them?

“Every Sunday, we bring our waste to the Lord, so why not as a church bring our physical waste to the Lord at the same time,” said a pastor in a church in Accra, Ghana, running a plastic waste recycling program. Why is creation care essential for him? And why are creation care and climate change important for me as a Christian? Is there anything that we can do about it? Is there tension between the Christian narrative on action for creation care and the other narratives about fighting climate change? How are Evangelical churches building momentum after COP26 and ahead of future global gatherings?

To answer all these questions and more, Wissam al-Saliby and Joel Veldkamp interviewed Matthias Boehnig for Episode 14 of the Didomi Podcast.
Can we discuss abortion in an edifying way? An interview with Calum Miller – part 1

When it comes to abortion, many of us may hesitant about the best way to engage faithfully. Pro-choice and pro-life advocates can be loud, combative and assertive. In many countries, the issue is extremely divisive. And yet, while keeping in mind that the battle is the Lord’s and that He is sovereign, we are called to speak truth and justice in the public sphere with humility and grace.

In part one of a two-part interview, Didomi podcast co-hosts Manal El Tayyar and Matthew Jones ask medical doctor and ethicist Calum Miller some difficult questions to help equip us to better engage on the topic of abortion. It is our hope that this episode and the next one equip us to understand what roles we, as a church and as Christians, need to play to care for women who are faced with one of the most difficult choices in life.

Dr Miller graduated from the University of Oxford Medical School in 2015, and currently works as a medical doctor in the UK. He holds a Master’s Degree in Biblical Studies and teaches Philosophy at the University of Oxford, where his research focuses on abortion policy in practice.

Based in Lebanon, episode co-host Manal El Tayar is the Regional Fragile States and Peacebuilding Advisor with TearFund. Based in Geneva, episode co-host Matthew Jones is a human rights advocate working to strengthen civil society space across Europe and the South Caucasus.

On 4 August 2020, Beirut witnessed one of the the biggest non-nuclear explosions the world has ever seen. Lebanon is enduring a severe and prolonged economic depression, which, according to the World Bank, ranks in the top 10, possibly top 3, most severe crises globally since the mid-nineteenth century. In addition, Lebanon has the largest refugees-to-population ratio, with over one million refugees from Syria, Iraq and Palestine.

In this context, what does church and ministry look like? Amid chaos – power cuts, fuel and medicine shortages, runaway inflation, etc. - how can the churches and Lebanese Christians share the hope we have in Christ? And how can we pray for the churches and for Lebanon?

Wissam Nasrallah, Chief Operations Officer of the Lebanese Society for Educational and Social Development (LSESD), joins us from Lebanon to answer these questions. LSESD’s vision is to see communities transformed and churches flourishing both in Lebanon and in the wider Middle East and North Africa region for the glory of God.

In Asia, the church is growing fast. And in most of South Asia, Christians are among the religious minorities. How is Christianity perceived, and how is religion politicized? Amid mounting nationalism, what challenges are Christians and religious minorities facing? What opportunities exist for them to advocate for peace and justice? How can we pray in support of our brothers and sisters?

To answer these questions, Michael Mutzner and Arie De Pater interviewed Yamini Ravindran, attorney-at-law from Sri Lanka, the director of advocacy at the National Christian Evangelical Alliance of Sri Lanka, the Executive Director for the Religious Liberty Commission of the Asia Evangelical Alliance. She was a member of the International Council of the World Evangelical Alliance (at time of recording).

This month, we have witnessed yet another armed conflict in the Holy Land. In addition to the fighting between Israel and Hamas, Palestinians across the Holy Land took to the street to protest. The ferocity of the Palestinian anger caught Israel and the world by surprise.

Is Palestinian anger at Israel righteous? Where does the injustice in the Holy Land lie? How can the Palestinian Christian response to Israel's injustice be a demonstration of love? How do Palestinian Christians make the connection between being Evangelical and their national identity? What is a Palestinian Evangelical message to Hamas? And how can we pray for Palestinian brothers and sisters?

Didomi podcast co-host Wissam al-Saliby asked these questions to three Palestinian Evangelicals. Marwan Aboul-Zelof is an American of Palestinian origin and planting pastor of City Bible Church in Beirut, Lebanon. Daniel Bannoura is a Palestinian from the West Bank, currently pursuing a PhD in Qur'anic Studies at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, in the United States. And Rawan Sabbah Munayyer is a Palestinian holding Israeli citizenship living in Jerusalem, currently pursuing a PhD at Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Multicultural Education and Social Psychology.

India is the biggest democracy in the world. However, recent reports and democracy indexes have noted that democracy is backsliding in India. Religious minorities are feeling the brunt of Hindu nationalism. The COVID-19 pandemic has only aggravated the situation. Pastor Vijayesh Lal, General secretary of the Evangelical Fellowship of India, joins us from New Delhi to share with us on what the churches are doing in support of minorities rights, rule of law, and religious freedom in India.

This episode is co-hosted by Wissam al-Saliby and Michael Mutzner. Michael will also update us on the Swiss initiative for responsible multinational businesses.
