C’est une des recherches que supervise Jean-Marc, “Foundations and the Transition to a Future Good for People, Planet and Place: Partnership development and initial research” qui a nourri le sujet de ce podcast. Cette étude à plusieurs objectifs :

· Faire participer les réseaux philanthropiques canadiens et les fondations à l’élaboration d’un programme de recherche sur le rôle des fondations dans une transition socio-écologique et économique juste.

· Produire une analyse documentaire qui identifie les principaux cadres de transition socio-écologique et économique, y compris la « transition juste », qui pourraient être utilisés pour de futures activités de recherche et d’engagement avec les fondations.

· Recueillir des informations initiales sur les approches et les activités déjà mises en œuvre et expérimentées pour influencer la culture et l’état d’esprit des organisations philanthropiques dirigées par les colons, en vue d’une transition juste.

· Élaborer un plan de recherche et une proposition de projet à présenter au PhiLab.

Notre discussion a donc principalement tourné autour du rôle, présent et futur, des fondations dans la mise en place d’une transition juste et durable. On a abordé de nombreux enjeux liés à cette cause, tel que la définition des missions des fondations, les relations entre les différents enjeux et causes philanthropiques, ou encore l’urgence de la situation écologique actuelle.

For this new episode I welcome Jean-Marc Fontan, Researcher and Co-Director of the PhiLab, and Jacqueline Colting-Stol, student at McGill University.

It is one of Jean-Marc’s research projects, "Foundations and the Transition to a Future Good for People, Planet and Place: Partnership development and initial research" that fueled the genesis of the podcast. This research has several objectives:

- To engage Canadian philanthropic networks and foundations in the development of a research agenda around the role of foundations in a just socio-ecological and economic transition.

- Produce a literature review that identifies key social-ecological and economic transition frameworks, including "just transition", that could be used for future research and engagement with foundations.

- Gather initial information on approaches and activities already implemented and tested to influence the culture and mindset of settler-led philanthropic organizations toward just transition.

Enquête sur la démarche collaborative entre fondations subventionnaires visant à soutenir le développement du Bâtiment 7, qui est à l'origine de cet épisode. Cette étude vise à comprendre comment une initiative comme le Bâtiment 7, qui se situe explicitement du côté des « communs » nourrie par une pensée anarchiste, puisse chercher un soutien du côté de fondations privées ? Ce projet cherche à éclairer les conditions de possibilité sociales, économiques et politiques, d’une telle collaboration et ses défis.

Avec mes invités on a parlé des mutations que subit la philanthropie pour transitionner vers des modèles de financement plus humain juste et solidaire. On a donc discuté de justice sociale, de transition philanthropique et de philanthropie de proximité.

Le Bâtiment 7 est un exemple parfait pour illustrer cette nouvelle manière de penser la philanthropie. Comment est repensé le rôle des fondations ? Quels outils sont créés et mis à disposition pour permettre de construire une relation de confiance ?  Comment une alliance entre un projet aussi indépendant et autonome et des fondations privées a pu voir le jour ? Ou encore comment se structure le B7 ? Ce sont autant de questions auxquelles nous avons répondu dans ce nouvel épisode du Balado du PhiLab

For this new episode, I received Sylvain A. Lefèvre, PhiLab researcher, Jacques Bordeleau, member of the Collectif des fondations québécoises contre les inégalités sociales and today strategic advisor in partnership and development for the Fondation Béati, and finally Judith Cayer, responsible for the workshops and active actor of Bâtiment 7.

One of Sylvain's PhiLab-funded research projects, « La philanthropie à la rencontre d'un commun. Investigating the Collaborative Approach of Grantmaking Foundations to Support the Development of Bâtiment 7”, inspired this episode. His study aims to understand how an initiative like Bâtiment 7, which explicitly situates itself on the side of the "commons" and is nourished by anarchist thought, can seek support from private foundations. This project seeks to shed light on the conditions of possibility: social, economic and political, of such collaboration and its challenges.

With our guests, we talked about the changes that philanthropy is undergoing in order to transition to more humane, just and supportive funding models. We discussed social justice, philanthropic transition and community philanthropy.

Bâtiment 7 is a perfect example to illustrate this new way of thinking about philanthropy. How is the role of foundations being rethought? What tools are created and made available to build a relationship of trust?  How did an alliance between such an independent and autonomous project and private foundations come about? Or how is B7 structured? These are some of the questions we answered in this new episode of the PhiLab Podcast.

Avec des mouvements sociaux comme ''Land Back'' et ''BLM'', on entend des voix qui demandent à reprendre le contrôle de leurs vies à travers l'autonomie et l'innovation culturelle.
Dans cette logique, il n'est plus réaliste de regarder un problème et d'y mettre un prix, il nous faut comprendre le contexte derrière la problématique, la réalité des acteurs en jeu, les biais et barrières qui font ralentir l'acheminement de ressources et bien d'autres angles d'analyse.

Nos deux invités ont accepté de participer à un exercice de réflexion en nous présentant les approches de collaboration avec leurs organisations.

We tend to think that mental health is the gateway to a good life but there is more to it.
The Wellbeing Project is a collective that wants to show how important it is to balance all the aspects of health through policies to make change happen.

We will go through their method and philosophy to explore how the social change sector can improve in the field. Wellbeing is a process that is unique to the context and this should be the principal lens through which we analyze this issue.

Today I'm speaking with Sue Griggs and Dana Preston who are both working with the WellBeing Project.
We tend to think that mental health is the gateway to a good life but there is more to it.
The Wellbeing Project is a collective that wants to show how important it is to balance all the aspects of health through policies to make change happen.

We will go through their method and philosophy to explore how the social change sector can improve in the field. Wellbeing is a process that is unique to the context and this should be the principal lens through which we analyze this issue.

As the scientific world is often seen interacting with communities to observe and analyze
events or phenomena,
it is important to understand and be aware of the challenges and impacts the research process has on communities themselves.
Too often those who were the subjects of observation have been put in situations where they don't see any benefits from participating in the scientific process

More than ever, it is important to find a way to create a win-win dynamic so that communities and researchers can both prosper from the research process.

To dig a little deeper into this process,
I will be talking with Shelley Price and Kim Chevrier who are both well aware of this challenge.
Shelley is an Assistant Professor at St. Francis Xavier University in the Department of Management.
Shelley’s passion for education, knowledge acquisition and respect for cultural, traditional and spiritual connection to the land is central in her research.
As an Inuk woman from Labrador, she was raised to respect the teachings that her Elders shared with her through stories and through being on the land.
She is also a research member of PhiLab’s Atlantic hub and Indigenous Research Cluster.

Kim on the other hand is a member of Kebaowek First Nation, located in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region.
Since 1993, Kim has worked for various Indigenous organizations, including the Odawa Native Friendship Center,
Lethbridge Native Employment centre as well as the institute for Advancement of Aboriginal Women.

They will both take part in this conversation to help us to see a different way of conducting research
By showcasing a method called Collective storytelling
