Migration has long been a defining issue for the European Union, testing its capacity to act collectively while upholding human rights and international standards. In recent years, the EU has increasingly relied on externalisation (meaning outsourcing migration control to third countries) to reduce irregular arrivals. While this approach may be effective in deterring migration, it raises serious concerns about transparency, accountability, and compliance with the EU’s legal and moral obligations.

In this episode of Making Sense of EU, we explore the tensions in EU migration policy with Johan Ekstedt, postdoctoral fellow at the Université libre de Bruxelles. These boards, which have significant control over university operations, are part of public interest trust management foundations that received substantial public assets. Concerns include reduced academic freedom, the potential creation of a parallel state, and conflicts of interest. The European Commission triggered a conditionality mechanism in September 2022 due to procurement and transparency issues, impacting EU funding and programs like Horizon and Erasmus+. Despite government commitments to address these issues, a December 2023 reassessment found no significant changes. The podcast also features insights from an attorney with a Hungarian anti-corruption watchdog and an associate professor at Northumbria University, discussing the motivations behind the transformations and the implications for academic freedom and bureaucratic versus political control.

Hosted on Ausha. So go to the polls and #UseYourVote!

From 6-9 June, more than 400 million EU citizens are eligible to vote in this year’s EU election, making it the second biggest democratic election on the globe.

In this episode of #TalkingWithEU, our two co-hosts, Cora Rimoldi and Felix Fend, together with our two guests, Carmen Noviello and Ludovica Colosimo dive deep into the way our European Elections work. We talk more about the ‘Spitzenkandidaten’ principle, what it is, and why it didn’t work the last time in 2019. And we’re not tipping around the elephant in the room: What are the chances of current European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen being reelected after this year’s election?

But we discuss also in this episode: Are our guests going to vote in this election, and why or why not? What has changed in the last years that led to the rise of right-wing and far-right parties in the polls, while the Greens are projected to loose seats? And what do we need to make the European Parliament Elections really more European and democratic?

If you’re still unsure where and when you can vote for the European Parliament Elections 2024, then click here https://elections.europa.eu/

Listen to this episode and get the full students’ POV!

Hosted on Ausha.

Welcome back to Making Sense of EU! This is already the fifth episode of the series's second season.

As a reminder, as part of the RED-SPINEL research project, the season is dedicated to exploring the challenges liberal democracy is facing in the European Union.

Our understanding of who we are, how we perceive others, and what our sense of belonging might be all depend on the stories we tell ourselves. In a context marked by polarization and even disinformation; dissensus surrounding these common stories can have far-reaching consequences.

To help us make sense of the stories being told about European democracies and their corollary values, we welcome professors François Foret & Maximilian Conrad.

François Foret is professor of Political Science and president of the Institut d'études européennes (IEE) at the Université libre de Bruxelles. His research interests include European integration; identity and memory; symbolic legitimization of political orders; interaction between religion and politics; and comparative politics. Maximilian Conrad is a Professor at the University of Iceland - Háskóli Íslands. He is also the Principal Investigator of RECLAIM, a fellow Horizon-funded project on "Reclaiming Liberal Democracy in Europe". His research interests include: European integration, German politics, and political theory, particularly issues connected to democracy, communication, civil society, and the public sphere. Ongoing research includes work on the implications of post-truth politics for liberal democracy in Europe.

Hosted on Ausha.
